MLD / ZLD
Concentrate before the thermal step.
Evaluate membrane preconcentration ahead of evaporation or crystallization in minimum liquid discharge (MLD) and zero liquid discharge (ZLD) treatment trains.

APPLICATION NOTE
Define the opportunity.
The application objective is to recover additional water and reduce the liquid volume requiring downstream thermal treatment. TFX-BCRO is an upstream concentration pathway; it is not presented as a complete stand-alone ZLD system.
This application note adapts the supplied company portfolio and brochure. The evaluation steps below describe how to scope a project; they are not a process-performance guarantee.
PROCESS CONTEXT
Connect membrane concentration to the next step.
Defined chemistry and process duty.
Evaluate additional water recovery.
Meet the downstream feed requirement.
Evaporation, crystallization, or dedicated recovery as required.
Conceptual sequence only. The membrane permeate is a separate outlet; required polishing, stage recycle, and final configuration are duty-specific.
EVALUATION FRAMEWORK
Specify the feed. Define success.
- 01
Define the final endpoint
Specify the liquid and solid outputs required from the complete treatment train.
- 02
Evaluate the membrane endpoint
Assess feed chemistry, scaling, fouling, membrane rejection, and feasible concentration under the intended duty.
- 03
Connect the unit operations
Calculate the downstream evaporator or crystallizer feed after including permeate handling and recycle.
COMMON QUESTIONS
Keep the boundaries clear.
Are thermal-energy savings guaranteed?
No fixed energy-saving percentage is stated. Quantify the actual membrane and thermal duties within the same process boundary.
Does membrane preconcentration itself achieve ZLD?
The proposed role is upstream water recovery and brine-volume reduction. Any final liquid elimination or solids production must be established for the complete process.
