Process selection

Choose the process.
Then select the membrane.

A practical comparison of UHPRO, OARO, and LSRRO for application-specific brine concentration.

PROCESS-SELECTION NOTE

Compare complete processes, not individual membranes.

Ultra-high-pressure reverse osmosis (UHPRO), osmotically assisted reverse osmosis (OARO), and low-salt-rejection reverse osmosis (LSRRO) offer different design routes for brine concentration. The descriptions below are process-level context, not a claim that NEXT TFX supplies every complete system.

Three process approaches for demanding concentration duties
ApproachPrimary mechanismEvaluation priority
UHPROHigher applied hydraulic pressure provides a concentration pathway.Pressure capability, compaction resistance, feed chemistry, and complete-system rating.
OAROA saline permeate-side stream reduces the osmotic-pressure difference across the membrane.Both-side flow management, module suitability, staging, and recovery of final product water.
LSRRODeliberate salt passage reduces the osmotic-pressure difference in concentration stages.Permeate reprocessing, recycle, stage rejection, and final water quality.

Process context: (Wang et al., 2021); membrane pressure evidence: (Wu et al., 2025).

Wang et al. (2021) found that relative energy use depended on feed salinity, stage count, and maximum pressure. There is no universal efficiency ranking from this comparison.

A COMMON BASIS

Keep the system boundary fixed.

  1. 01

    Match the outputs

Compare the same net recovery, final concentrate, and delivered product-water quality.

  2. 02

    Include all treatment steps

Account for recycle, permeate polishing, pumping, energy recovery, and downstream treatment.

  3. 03

    Use a qualified membrane model

Apply appropriate flux, rejection, concentration, and operating-limit data for the actual membrane and feed.

WHERE TFX FITS

A membrane-material platform, not a universal flowsheet.

The TFX portfolio offers high-, medium-, and low-rejection development pathways. Their role in any cascade must be established by process design and element qualification. A low-rejection high-pressure stage does not, by itself, reproduce the net water quality or recovery of a complete LSRRO cascade.
